Trends to Watch: AI & Search for Small Businesses

A sourced reading list for founders following AI agents and changes in search. Reviewed 24 October 2026.

Two developments worth following are the use of AI agents in business workflows and the growth of AI-assisted search. This is an editorial watchlist, not a ranking by search volume or popularity.

Reviewed: 24 October 2026. The sources below describe their own research and products. Their findings should not be treated as universal results for every small business.

1. AI agents need workable business processes

Microsoft’s May 2026 Work Trend Index examines AI and agents at work using surveys of AI users and Microsoft 365 telemetry. Its discussion emphasizes redesigning work, documenting handoffs and evaluating outcomes. That makes process design a useful topic for founders to follow alongside new tools.

A practical next step: choose one repeatable internal task, document its inputs and success criteria, and compare an assisted workflow with your current approach. Keep approval for external messages, purchases and other consequential actions.

2. Search discovery now includes AI-generated answers

Google’s guidance says the established foundations of search remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Pages need to be indexable and eligible for snippets, and internal links should help people find useful information. There is no special AI markup that guarantees inclusion.

A practical next step: improve one article that answers a real customer question. Include a clear answer, an original example, sources for factual claims and links to the next useful guide. Check indexing and search performance before expanding into dozens of similar pages.

Turn the watchlist into useful work

  • Start with a question your customers actually ask.
  • Write down the source date and what the evidence does and does not establish.
  • Try a small change and record the result before recommending it.
  • Revisit an article when its tools, sources or conclusions change.
